Gateau Monique

Treatment & Project Scout

Story Arc: Enough for Tomorrow

A short film about restraint, intention, and the beauty of staying small.

I. Opening: The Routine

  • Monique opens the bakery, prepares the space.

  • She unlocks and opens the vault, a slow, quiet moment.

  • Voiceover: “I make enough for tomorrow. That’s it.”

  • We’re introduced to the irony: she stores her ingredients in an old bank vault, once a symbol of money, now holding cream and berries.

II. Grounded in Littlestown

  • Exterior shots of the town waking up.

  • Locals arriving, conversations at the counter.

  • Monique reflects on what Littlestown means to her, and how she serves it creatively.

III. Backstory & Craft

  • Monique talks about her family, her Thai and French culinary roots, and her time in pro kitchens.

  • We intercut memories, kitchen textures, and heritage with present-day prep.

INTERLUDE: “The Roll” – Stylized Baking Montage

A high-style, high-emotion sequence of the roulade coming to life, visual rhythm, texture, beauty.

  • Her hands conducting as she speaks throughout the prep.

  • Whipping cream (macro and slow-mo), batter pour, powdered sugar falling like snow.

  • Chocolate being spread and rolled camera rotating with it.

  • Close-up of oven heat shimmer, the vault as a cold counterbalance.

  • Finishing touches: powdered sugar, slicing, serving.

Tone: Dreamlike, tactile, rhythmic. Could pair with music or slowed voiceover about process, patience, or creativity.

IV. The Vault & the Choice

  • She talks about staying small on purpose.

  • Reflections on the irony of storing ingredients in a bank vault.

  • Vault = her container for what matters: boundaries, values, care.

  • Macro shot of vault gears turning.

V. Closing: Enough for Tomorrow

  • The bakery winds down.

  • Final shot: Monique places the roulade in the vault, closes the door, and turns off the lights.

  • Voiceover: “I don’t need more. I just need it to matter.”

  • “Just enough for tomorrow.” Small batch mentality.

  • The challenges of business, growth, and life.

  • Similarities of running a business, kitchen, and home.

  • The taste of a town and creative endeavors. (balancing tradition with innovation)
